April 14 & 15, 2016

Thursday & Friday, April 14 & 15, 2016

Left McMinnville, OR, to drive to the coastal town of Tillamook, OR.  We discovered they had started a quilt trail in 2011.  With that information we decided to go ahead and drive up the coast today and then stop in Astoria, OR, for the night.  After checking out the quilt blocks and a couple of cheese places in Tillamook, we continued up the coast driving through many quaint little coastal towns; to include towns like Rockaway Beach and Cannon Beach, (which we loved). The town of Cannon Beach was named for a cannon washing ashore from the shipwrecked USS Shark in 1846.  This town also has a huge rock, called the Haystack Rock, which is an off shore 235 feet tall monolith and home to many nesting seabirds.  Next we saw the not so quaint town of Seaside before arriving in Astoria for our overnight stop.

Our stop for the night at the Astoria Riverwalk Inn; arrived and the sun came out!  This town is near where Lewis & Clark wintered in 1805.  Fort Clatsop is just a few miles away.

Friday- We left Astoria and took US 30  to Portland
and then got on Historic US 30 to drive along the
Columbia River to see all the water falls.

Stopped in Walla Walla. MT for our overnight stay.

Huge beautiful Dogwoods in bloom!  Didn't know they would grow here!
