Saturday, April 2

Wow--we have put almost 3,000 miles on the car and everyday I feel so blessed getting to take this awesome road trip with my one and only!!

Today we left Alamogordo, NM and had a short drive to the White Sands Nat'l Monument.  If you haven't seen it, you will see in the pictures that the gypsum really does look like sand, but it feels oh so different!

Mountains in the background are probably 30 - 40 mile away.

They allow children and adults to sled down the dunes.

Then we left White Sands and had another scenic drive to include driving on the Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway.  Along the way one very small town, Hillsboro, NM, didn't even have a stop sign and the town was maybe four blocks long.  Being a Saturday, it looked like all the town folk were on the porch of the small Post Office/ store.  Some men were playing guitars and everyone was sitting with them chatting and laughing.  It just didn't feel right to take their picture though; but it sure did feel like we had stepped back in time!
As we were driving on the Trail of the Mountains Spirits National Scenic Byway to reach the Gila Cliff Dwellings we had 3 dear run in front of us and one behind the car.  We were so surprised we didn't get a picture.

We pulled off the Byway for a quick picnic lunch, the road was so full of switch backs and no way to eat and drive--besides the scenery was just too pretty to eat on the run!

Our picnic spot!

Six caves total, we were allowed to go into 3 of them.

After leaving the Gila Dwellings it was time to drive to our over night stop in Silver City, NM.
