Saturday we left Chamberlain, SD and continued on scenic roads to make our way towards Iowa, for a while driving in Minnesota. We stopped in several small towns, one being Sioux Falls, SD. They had a very pretty neighborhood with a big park and pretty homes, some big - some small. The entrance to McKennan Park had four stone pillars that were made with stones from the Continental States.
In South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa there are miles of wind turbines. Another quick stop was in Worthington, MN to see this Pioneer Village but it wasn't open yet. On Saturday, we hit Iowa, our 19th state and we had put over 9,000 miles on our car. Next stop was in Clear Lake, Iowa, to drive by the Surf Ballroom. This was where the "legends" Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson played their last concert! Then we drove on to the very next small town, Mason City, IA where we spent the night at the Historic Park Hotel. This is the last remaining Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built hotel in the world. It was a lovely hotel with fabulous rooms!! They also had a wonderful restaurant where we had a delicious dinner.
Sunday, we left Mason City and continued
on our scenic roads to make our way first to Dubuque, IA
to see the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. Again, the roads were littered with wind turbines.
Really enjoyed the museum, loved walking on an old dredging boat! We drove along the Mississippi River for a short time and then took a scenic drive to Cedar Falls, IA.
We found a room at the Historic Blackhawk Hotel, in downtown Cedar Falls.
